How To Create A Customer Persona?

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

A customer persona (also known as a buyer persona) helps you identify and target your ideal customer. They help you put the needs and wants of your audience first when creating content and running campaigns.

A customer persona is a detailed, researched description of a fictional character who represents your ideal target audience. You may need to create more than one, depending on what services/products you offer.

How to create a customer persona?

1. Audience research

You need to do thorough research on your target audience when creating a customer persona. Who are they? Where can you find them? Who is your competitor's target audience? Below I have listed some of the things you should aim to find out about your audience.

  • Demographics - Age, Location, Gender

  • Background - Career, Lifestyle, Family

  • Identifiers - Social Media Platforms, Communication Preferences

  • Challenges and Goals

2. How can we help them?

Next, we want to work out how we can help our customer persona overcome their challenges, and help them achieve their goals. Your audience’s goals might be personal or professional, depending on the kinds of products and services you sell. What are their goals? What are their pain points? What are the things that are preventing them from achieving these goals?

You can learn why they love your products, or which parts of the customer experience are just not working by setting up search streams to monitor mentions of your brand, products, and competitors.

Once you’ve gathered all this information, you can work out what you need to do to help your audience. Are one of your audience's pain points, poor communication with your brand? If so, you can do something to improve communication to help them.

3. Create your persona

Gather all your research together and use it to start looking for similar characteristics, and use these similarities to create your persona. Give your buyer persona a name, a job title, a home, and other defining characteristics. You want your persona to seem like a real person.

Every time you make decisions about your marketing strategy, goals, and content, you should keep your customer personas in mind. Customer personas will help you do right by your customers, build trust and loyalty.
